Damage caused by wildlife – How does the electric fence provide a solution?

Damage caused by wildlife is a serious problem for farmers. Wild boars, deer, and other animals regularly destroy crops, damage fences, and cause significant economic losses. Wildlife damage affects not only agricultural products but also forestry, as damage to saplings hinders the natural regeneration of forests. However, there is an effective and sustainable solution: the electric fence.

In the past, farmers used various noise-making methods such as carbide cannons or dogs to keep wildlife away, and others tried using plastic sheets or nets, but these makeshift solutions were usually ineffective and did not provide long-term protection. Modern technology, however, has brought electric fences, which not only effectively protect but also cost-efficiently safeguard areas, as proper installation and maintenance of the electric fence minimize wildlife damage and ensure the protection of crops.

Why is it important to install it on time?

Many people mistakenly think that wildlife protection should only be addressed when the crops have already grown. However, this approach is risky, as wildlife can cause damage at any time. The sooner we install the electric fence, the better we can prevent the problem. And most importantly: prevention is always cheaper and more effective than damage recovery.

Some farmers only realize later that the losses from wildlife damage would have covered the cost of an electric fence system. By that time, they have already lost part of their crops, and the animals have "eaten" the cost of the system.

Why is the electric fence the best solution?

The electric fence is an effective and cost-saving alternative to traditional fences. Installing a permanent fence can cost up to ten times more than an electric system. Moreover, the electric fence is easily dismantled, relocated, and reused in the next season.

Its main advantages include: efficiency – it keeps wildlife away, protecting crops and fences; cost-effectiveness – a budget-friendly solution compared to traditional fences; and easy installation – it can be set up quickly and easily, even without expertise.

How does the electric fence work?

The electric fence system requires a pulse generator, which sends high-voltage electrical pulses through the fence wires. These wires can be stretched around, for example, a cornfield. The electrical pulses travel along the wires, and grounding ensures the circuit is closed. If an animal touches the fence, the circuit is completed, and the animal receives a short but effective electric shock. This does not cause permanent harm but is unpleasant enough to deter the animal from attempting to cross again.

The current can travel through electric fence wire or electric fence tape — both effective options depending on visibility and strength needs.

The wires need to be set up in multiple rows so that animals cannot crawl under or between them. It is essential to secure the posts, especially at the corners, firmly, as a wild boar herd can easily knock down a poorly secured fence. The stronger the corners, the more stable and taut the electric fence will be, providing more effective protection against wildlife damage.

The farmer's responsibilities are: Ensuring the proper voltage (at least 10,000 V), Installing the wires in at least 3–4 rows, Regular maintenance of the surroundings, such as trimming vegetation along the fence, Securing the corners firmly to prevent larger animals from damaging the system.

The electric fence ensures long-term peace of mind for farmers and protects crops, but action must be taken as soon as possible. We cannot wait until the wildlife destroys the hard-earned crops.
